The food van has been running for 15 years and is Kehilat Nitzan’s largest Tikkun Olam project.
Every Tuesday a group of enthusiastic volunteers gather to shop, cook, drive, serve, and clean up so disadvantaged families and individuals in Port Melbourne have a reliable evening meal.
We serve a communal dinner with long trestles of home-cooked casseroles, salads, and fruit. People come from all over not only to share their meal but also to connect with other people. Many of these people live alone and do not work, so this might be their only social interaction for the week. Some people come just for a hug!
The food van partners with the Father Bob Foundation, which provides the kitchen/storage facility, tables and chairs, marquees when it rains, and the actual van. Our community provides a social worker, the food (which is delicious and nutritious) and the generous-hearted and energy-filled volunteers.
